Comic Relief Partnership

We are delighted to announce that Comic Relief has chosen ABC Trust to manage their small grants programme in Brazil! This is a significant three year commitment by Comic Relief to support 5 grassroots projects working with marginalised children in Rio and Sao Paolo.

The projects that they will be supporting are:

Grupo Nós project, Fazendo Historia

We are starting a new partnership with Fazendo História (Creating Stories Institute), a unique educational and development programme that supports children and adolescents living in shelters.

Grupo Nós (Our Group) works with young people helping them integrate into mainstream society and find homes and jobs.  It creates a peer support group and by giving the adolescents emotional, financial and vocational support, it helps to build practical skills and prepare the young people for the challenges that they will face.

Animation project, Cinema Nosso

Cinema Nosso uses film and video to educate, empower and develop communication skills, creativity and critical thinking. It was established in 2002 from the process of casting for the film City of God

Cinema Nosso will work in partnership with 2 schools in 2 communities in Rio de Janeiro using audio-visual tools - mainly animation - to engage children, their families, teachers and the community. Animation is used as an instrument to discuss sensitive subjects in the children’s lives, and involve their families and the community in helping to address issues. Film and video will also be used in the classrooms to inspire learning and education.

Family Guardian project, ACER

ACER - which is already an ABC partner - and this new partnership will allow them to extend the Family Guardian project, which has been very successful in Eldorado, in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo, to a neighbouring municipality.

The Family Guardian project provides a positive alternative to shelters, placing children within their own extended family and community network. Children who have been removed from their parents by court are linked with wider family members (Guardians) who are supported as a whole by professional social workers and psychologists.

Children’s Cultural Centre, CEACA

Ceaca is a large community run organization, providing a wide range of socio-educative and cultural activities for children, young people and their families in the Morro dos Macacos community in Rio de Janeiro.

CEACA’s Children’s Cultural Centre provides 4-10 year old children with cultural activities, IT, English, percussion, dance, games, arts, English, Portuguese and a library, working on their development and focusing on their freedom of choice and ability to express themselves.  They are taught their rights and responsibility for their own education, inspiring interest in learning and growth.

Social Circus project, Crescer e Viver

Based in Rio de Janeiro, Crescer e Viver is one of the most respected and recognised organisations in Brazil using social circus as a tool for social transformation.

The Social Circus project reaches out to children from favelas in the central region of the city where there are high numbers of children living and working on the streets. It integrates the artistic languages of music, theatre, dance, capoeira and literature into its programme to train children and youth to build their autonomy, raise their self-esteem and develop life-skills. The organization also works with the family of each child, to help them give the best support to their children.
